The Hobart Cup
The Hobart Cup is a Group 3 open handicap race that is held annually on a Monday afternoon each February at Hobart racecourse in Hobart, Tasmania. It is part of the Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival, and is also one of Tasmania’s main annual social events. The race is run over a distance of 2200 metres and is worth $400,000 in prize money.
The racing industry in Tasmania is currently being restructured and will eventually be jointly managed by the new Racing Services Tasmania and TOTE Tasmania. Dual Melbourne Cup winning jockey, Damien Oliver, is down to ride the Danny O’Brien-trained, Reputable, in Monday’s $400,000 feature race. The race is one of only three Group 3 races in Tasmania each year along with the Tasmania Derby & Launceston Cup, and Hobart Cup Day has become a major social event in Southern Tasmania.
The Cup much like the Derby usually attracts the best local gallopers available, and now and then an interstate horse may make the journey across to Tasmania to try and win a Cup. It was won in 2009 by Gotta Keep Coolfrom Zavite with Dream Pedlar third.
Other notable races on Cup day are the listed Wrest Point Strutt Stakes(2100) & Thomas Lyons Stakes(1400m). In recent times the Cup has been taken out by Blutigeroo(2007), True Courser(2006), and Our Dashing Danein 2005. Others are as follows:
- 2018 – Pretty Punk
- 2017 – Count Da Vinci
- 2016 – Up Cups
- 2015 – Geegees Blackflash
- 2014 – Epingle
- 2013 – Hurdy Gurdy Man
