History Of Perth Cup
First run in 1887, the Perth Cup has a long and proud history and is the first major social event of the new year in Western Australia. The race was formerly run at 3200m but Perth Racing has announced that the 2009 running of the Cup will be over a distance of 2400m in an effort to attract a higher quality field But the racing is only part of the fun with the event providing a great excuse for racegoers to dress up in their finest clothes with flamboyant hats being de rigueur for many of the ladies.

Mr P.A. Connolly had an amazing five consecutive and two later wins in the Perth Cup, with Blue Spec (in 1904), Czarowitch (1905), May King (1906), Post Town (1907), Scorcher (1908), Jolly Beggar (1910) and Jolly Cosy (a son of Jolly Beggar) in 1922.From 2009 onwards the race distance was 2400m.
