Geelong Cats vs Fremantle Dockers, Round 1 2025 - Expert Prediction

The Dockers will live up to the hype in 2025 and come close, if not pinch victory at GMHBA Stadium against the Cats in Round 1 of the AFL season.

Fremantle fizzled out at the end of 2024 but many are tipping the Perth boys to push for a top-four finish in 2025. With their midfield class including Brownlow contenders Caleb Serong and Andrew Brayshaw the Dockers will look to turn their solid defensive structure into many more wins in 2025.

The Cats will start a new era without Tom Hawkins indirectly replacing their star with another in Bailey Smith from the Dogs. It may take time for a new-look Cats side to warm up to the 2025 season which leaves an opening for the hungry Dockers to pinch a possible win.

Expect Freo’s backline to hold firm and keep the score low in this match giving their attack a chance to warm to the occasion. The 15.5 points are a gift for the Dockers, especially if their backline diffuses the attack of Geelong.

Andrew Brayshaw finished the 2024 season in impeccable form and was in everything for the Dockers, expect him to be on the ball more often than not and collect 30+ disposals.

  • Fremantle have won the last 2 matches against Geelong at GMHBA Stadium
  • Geelong covered the line in just 3 of 9 matches at GMHBA Stadium last season.
  • 6 of the last 7 games between Geelong and Fremantle have resulted in a game total under 172.5 points.
  • Andrew Brayshaw averaged 32.6 disposals in his last 5 games for the Dockers.

Head to Head

Geelong won the stand-alone fixture in 2024 against Fremantle, beating the Dockers at Optus Stadium 73-62. It was the first win for the Cats over the Dockers in 4 matches.

Geelong have hosted Fremantle twice at GMHBA Stadium in the last 6 years and Freo have won both of those contests, the most recent in 2023 where the Dockers got up 71-64.

Geelong Cats Form Analysis & Betting Trends

Recent Form

Geelong put aside their aging talks at the start of the 2024 season and got off to a flyer, starting the season 7-0. However, a mid season dip saw them rained in at the top, finishing 3rd. After a big against Port in the first week of the finals, the Cats fell to eventual premiers Brisbane in the Prelim.

Despite their success, Geelong struggled slightly in the midfield and have now brought in some youth to give them some more pace around the ball. Bailey Smith on the wing is the biggest addition for the Cats.

Geelong Cats Team News

The biggest news from the Cats is that new recruit Bailey Smith has been named to make his debut for the club after his move from the Bulldogs in the offseason.

The Cats Connor O'Sullivan, Mitch Knevitt and Jhye Clark are all named, alongside Sam De Koning in the ruck, in a new look for Geelong.

With the departure of Tom Hawkins, Cats captain Patrick Dangerfield moves into the forward line alongside Shannon Neale, Jeremy Cameron and small forwards Tyson Stengle, Brad Close and Gryan Miers.

Fremantle Dockers Form Analysis & Betting Trends

Recent Form

The Dockers had a horrid end to the 2024 season after showing serious promise throughout the year. Fremantle were in prime position for a surprise finals appearance but lost their last 4 matches of the home and away season and missed the eight.

The Dockers have one of the most reliable defensive games in the competition averaging just 76.3 points against last season that ranked them 4th in the AFL in opposition points. However, they lacked quality ball movement up the field at times and found it difficult to turn their defence into attack consistently.

Caleb Serong has begun to build as one of the top players in the competition recording an average of 29.4 disposals per game creating 4.5 inside 50´s. The 24-year-old will be the key to linking Freo’s top defence with their forward line. If Freo get even more from Serong in 2025 they will be a force.

Fremantle Dockers Team News

Some big news came out of Fremantle on team's day with 18-year-old Murphy Reid to make his debut for the club after being picked No. 17 in the 2024 draft. Fremantle captain Alex Pearce has also been named to play his first match since round 19 of 2024, after breaking his arm.

The less positive, new recruit Shai Bolton will miss the chance to debut for the club after being ruled out with a stress injury to his lower leg.
