The Kangaroos were the worst defensive team in the AFL last season and there wasn’t much improvement in their opening match of 2025, giving up 113 points to a injury affected Bulldogs.

Melbourne had goalkicking issues in 2024, however found 9 different individual goal scorers when they came within seconds of a huge upset against GWS last week.

The Demons will once again embrace their new-found forward pressure against the poor Kangaroos defence and kick over their team total of 95.5 points. Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver will be in everything and both record 25+ disposals as the Demons dominate possession and territory in the match.

  • Melbourne have won 5 of the last 6 matches against North Melbourne by 30+ points.
  • Melbourne have kicked 100+ points in 5 of their last 6 matches against North Melbourne.
  • Melbourne won the hit-outs 51-26 against GWS last weekend.
  • Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver recorded 27 & 25 disposals respectively in Round 1.

Head to Head

North Melbourne gave the Demons a scare in 2024, disintegrating their 39-point, third quarter lead all the way down to 3 points after kicking 6 unanswered goals, but Melbourne held on in the dying moments to avoid their first loss to the Kangaroos since 2019.

The Demons have won the last six matches against the Kangaroos with an average margin of 41 points. Besides the slim margin last season, Melbourne have beaten Norths by 30 points or more.

North Melbourne took it to a crippled Western Bulldogs side who were missing 7 of their first-choice starters, but still couldn’t do enough defensively, going down 113-97.

The Kangaroos conceded an average of 110 points last season and giving up over last season’s average in the opening round against the Bulldogs who were missing some key players in their lineup does not build confidence for the season to come.

In attack the Kangaroos looked sharp, finding Nick Larkey inside 50 and the 26-year-old making no mistake, kicking 5 goals against the Bulldogs. North Melbourne won in a lot of key areas, dominating the ruck, 52-31 in hit-outs and 42-36 in clearances, but still couldn’t do anything in turning the Bulldogs away.

Melbourne were just seconds away from getting a Round 1 win against GWS in a ferocious battle with the Giants where momentum swang back and forth all match. It wasn’t meant to be though with their three-point lead turning into a three-point deficit by the boot of Lachlan O’keefe in the 29th minute of the final term.

Despite the loss there were plenty of positives for the Demons, who had an underwhelming 2024 season where they struggled to kick goals. Melbourne had nine different goal kickers in the match with Christian Petracca and Matthew Jefferson kicking two each to lead the club.

Veteran Max Gawn dominated the ruck winning the hit-outs 51-26, however his superior came undone at times with GWS winning the clearances 48-36. All in all though it was a very positive start for the Dees.
