Rosehill Tips March 22
Race 1 - 12:30PM Midway Handicap Tips (1500m)
Best: 10. Lugarno. He continues to improve with racing and as I've expressed multiple times, the Midway's are tailormade for a late season three-year-old.
Lugarno had all favours when saluting fresh at Wyong, but there's still room to progress with this son of Rubick and he carries 3.5kg less from that run.
He was in strong maidens before breaking through, which includes a brave second to Pleasure Artist, who was then runner-up behind Swiftfalcon at Listed level.
Value: 17. Twin Turbo. While this is harder, it's worth respecting the eight-day turnaround third-up, especially with that second-up race being a fast-run event.
At a key stage, the five-year-old was kept in a pocket by the eventual winner of that Kembla Grange BM64 and he was a little one-paced from there.
Twin Turbo still wasn't beaten far, with that last outing following a somewhat plain return and he's now right down in the weights (51.5kg after the claim).
Race 2 - 1:05PM Bisley Workwear Epona Stakes Tips (1900m)
Best: 7. Mare Of Mt Buller. Looking to peak third-up off an encouraging start to the prep is this Chris Waller-trained mare, who is suited out to 1900m.
Mare Of Mt Buller was good fresh and she was then a month between runs second-up, where she ran the fastest closing sectionals of the Aspiration Quality.
She has 2kg weight swing in her favour over that winner (Little Baia) and the four-year-old has placed multiples times around this distance range (two at Stakes level).
Value: 9. Be Real. She did trial well leading into her Aspiration Quality return and as a result, there was money for Be Real at longs ahead of that March 8 tilt.
That 1600m performance had merit, where the grey was effectively held-up until the 100m and her last three wins have come in the 1800m-2000m range.
The last of those victories came in December at Rosehill and the subsequent form through Gilded Water reads okay (he beat Alalcance on Australian debut).
Race 3 - 1:40PM Asahi Super Dry N E Manion Cup Tips (2400m)
Best: 6. Alalcance. Her only time finishing out the money was a fourth via her second appearance in Ireland and she otherwise hasn't missed the quinella.
Alalcance bolted in on Australian debut before recording back-to-back seconds and she was then given time before a return via the Randwick City Stakes.
She needs to improve again to progress in the autumn staying features, but there's a platform to do so and Alalcance is the main on-speed influence in this field.
Value: 10. Strathay. Despite running the second-fastest last 400m and 200m of the Canberra Cup, Strathay should've finished a touch closer in that Listed race.
After jumping from an inside alley, he was back and in restricted room when looking to build momentum, although he was one run short there irrespective.
Strathay was consistent over a long first prep for Chris Waller, which culminated in two stakes placings over this trip before a sixth in the Group 1 Metropolitan.
Race 4 - 2:15PM Hyland Race Colours Darby Munro Stakes Tips (1200m)
Best: 3. Autumn Glow. She was three-from-three in her first prep and as a result, Autumn Glow was a short-priced fav for the Group 1 Flight Stakes.
Injury forced her to bypass that feature, which was taken out by Lady Shenandoah and while the 2025 return has been moved back, her trial work has been strong.
We saw The Autumn Sun fillies furnish over longer trips last autumn/winter, so class will need to get her home over 1200m (she hasn't raced below 1300m).
Value: 4. Fearless. He was thereabouts throughout most of his two-year-old outings and the Peter Snowden-trained colt has contested four Group 1's.
Fearless placed behind Broadsiding and Linebacker (both subsequent Group 1 winners) when rounding his last juvenile prep via the Group 1 Champagne Stakes.
There were excuses in his Golden Rose failure (bled) and after moving nicely in a quiet first trial, he completed a more searching hit-out to win his last heat.
Race 5 - 2:50PM Ranvet Stakes Tips (2000m)
Best: 6. Via Sistina. The Chris Waller-trained import is aiming to defend her Ranvet Stakes crown, with Via Sistina having taken out the 2024 edition when on Australian debut last autumn.
The daughter of Fastnet Rock has won a total of six Group 1's in Australia and that includes a last start triumph when second-up over 1600m in the Verry Elleegant Stakes.
J-Mac has options early from a low draw, as it'll allow the champion hoop to remain within sight of the on-speed influences should they roll along early.
Value: 2. Fawkner Park. It was a solid resumption from Fawkner Park in the Verry Elleegant Stakes, where the six-year-old was held-up at key stages before doing his best work late.
The son of Zoffany recorded the fastest last 200m of that mile Group 1 and he now steps up to his pet distance second-up (five wins and third from eight 2000m attempts).
Fawkner Park is unbeaten from two tries over this track/trip and he's building a good rapport with jockey Tyler Schiller, who has been aboard for his last four wins.
Race 6 - 3:25PM Sky Racing Rosehill Guineas Tips (2000m)
Best: 2. Goldrush Guru. He's improving with every run this prep, while with a Victoria Derby win and a Australian Guineas third to his name, there's similarities with Riff Rocket.
Riff Rocket took out the 2024 Rosehill Guineas before saluting in the Australian Derby and Goldrush Guru is on the same path, with the rise to 2000m ideal now.
No other horse in this field has saluted at 2000m+ and with Andrew Gluyas timing the campaign perfectly to date, this colt can land another feature win.
Next Best: 11. Aeliana. Aeliana could be the one from the Randwick Guineas who is searching for 2000m and the Chris Waller-trained filly isn't far away from a peak run third-up.
She's finished behind Broadsiding and Swiftfalcon via the key lead-up races over 1400m-1600m, although she's still been competitive against that pair.
After being kept in a pocket by Swiftfalcon at a key stage, Aeliana hit a flat spot in the Randwick Guineas before coming again late and that run should top her off nicely.
Value: 5. Plymouth. He has to be a chance if the Goldrush Guru form is right, with Plymouth also coming through the Australian Guineas and he was never clear in that race.
Plymouth was raw in four appearances over his first campaign, but The Autumn Sun gelding clearly has talent and blinkers went on ahead of his 2025 return.
Although Angel Capital proved too classy over 1400m in Autumn Stakes, it still was a decent return from Plymouth and he's still building into the campaign.
Race 7 - 4:00PM The Agency George Ryder Stakes Tips (1500m)
Best: 1. Ceolwulf. He rounded out his spring with two Group 1 wins and Pride Of Jenni, Tom Kitten, Fangirl and Royal Patronage were among the beaten brigade in those events.
With a lack of first-up form to his name, his Apollo Stakes resumption was more than a pass mark and Ceolwulf was then scratched from the Verry Elleegant Stakes.
As a result of missing that 1600m Group 1, the Joe Pride-trained galloper then dropped in distance to contest the Canterbury Stakes and he's suited back up in trip here.
Next Best: 4. Buckaroo. Buckaroo has been consistent since being gelded, with back-to-back wins before a narrow fourth-up defeat behind Via Sistina and he then contested the Cups.
WFA races around 1600m-2000m should be the aim and with this likely to be short autumn campaign, don't be surprised if he's ready to roll fresh at 1500m.
Both trials leading into this fresh assignment have been terrific, with the six-year-old catching the late in both heats and he's a forgotten runner in the early market.
Value: 9. Port Lockroy. Not much went his way as a late three-year-old, which included a huge fresh effort when just missing in a Canberra Guineas and he covered ground in that event.
Port Lockroy could've easily of had a win or two over spring before heading west, where he recorded a much-deserved victory in the Group 1 Railway Stakes.
He's got a big motor and Port Lockroy arguably should've won his last two first-up attempts, while he's around his pet distance for this fresh outing.
Race 8 - 4:35PM TAB Golden Slipper Tips (1200m)
Best: 8. Wodeton. Did he have his chance in the Todman Stakes? Yes, although you could've sworn that Wodeton finished alongside the ambulance if going off the post-race commentary.
That runner-up finish got the Coolmore colt into the Golden Slipper and there's no doubting that he'd be a short market elect here had he launched a fortnight ago.
Admittedly, the confidence levels aren't as high after the brilliant debut and unlucky Silver Slipper tilt, but we regularly see those Chris Waller runs before a grand final.
Next Best: 1. Rivellino. Rivellino is an undefeated youngster who completed a hat-trick in the Skyline Stakes and Skyhook (Pago Pago winner) was runner-up in that March 1 event.
At his second start, the Kris Lees-trained colt defeated three subsequent winners when taking out the Inglis Millenium and Within The Law was among those.
That's the only defeat for Within The Law (won her three other starts) and with Rivellino ticking the 1200m box last time out, there's isn't too many knocks.
Value: 15. Military Tycoon. It's not an ideal set-up, with Military Tycoon attempting a Golden Slipper second-up at start three and she's going from 1000m to 1200m for this feature tilt.
Connections had to have a throw at the stumps, especially given the lack of quality in this Golden Slipper field and the Ciaron Maher-trained filly is flying.
Thomas Stockdale was swinging off the juvenile in her first summer hit-out before taking out her second heat and she backed that up with a slick fresh win.
Race 9 - 5:15PM Kia Ora Galaxy Tips (1100m)
Best: 13. Private Harry. One of the most exciting sprinters in the country is the unbeaten Private Harry, who was freshened-up and aimed for The Galaxy after his Sunshine Coast success.
The form through that event has stood up through Lady Of Camelot, Arabian Summer and El Morzillo, while Private Harry has won two trials leading into this.
Russian Revolution (2017) was the last three-year-old to win The Galaxy, but the youngsters do have a good overall record in this race (19 wins from 52 editions).
Next Best: 14. Commemorative. The main knock is an inside draw for Commemorative, as the monster Godolphin mare does appreciate galloping room and she didn't get that space first-up.
There's always been a spruik for Commemorative and the penny might be starting to drop with the four-tear-old, who bounced back second-up at Randwick.
As an X-factor runner who carries just 51kg in The Galaxy, Commemorative has to be a contender and she just needs clear air to give this a serious shake.
Value: 4. Lady Laguna. She almost won the George Ryder Stakes on this card last year and Lady Laguna was in career best form at the time, with a Group 1 Canterbury Stakes win the highlight.
With her previous/early form lines pointing more towards the sprinting caper, I wouldn't be so sure that 1100m would be too sharp for this return attempt.
Three of her seven wins have come in the 1000m-1100m range and while her spring was a little disappointing, she was mainly contesting strong WFA races.
Race 10 - 5:55PM TAB Birthday Card Stakes Tips (1200m)
Best: 10. Austmarr. She's a big mare, who looks to carry plenty of condition, so there's clearly room to improve fitness-wise now third-up from a long spell.
Austmarr was competitive in both February appearances and while the beaten margins don't necessarily reflect it, her second-up run was more encouraging.
Godolphin have a decent record in this race (two of the last three winners), while Austmarr found her best touch when third and fourth-up last campaign.
Value: 11. Wooloowin. Connections are hunting for some black-type with Wooloowin, who was spelled after a stylish metro win on the Sunshine Coast.
She arrived to that QLD feature off an unlucky Rosehill effort, with that fifth on December 14 being her only time finishing out of the money from seven starts.
The depth of this is questionable and the favs are exposed, while she ran the fastest last 800m/600m/400m and 200m of the card when saluting first-up last prep.
