Ascot Roughie Tip
Race 6 No. 1 Weeraechoux
He found winning form deep into his last prep, with a second at stakes level before upsetting the Belmont Oaks winner when taking out the Listed Belmont Classic.
The gelding was in need of the run first-up over 1400m, but he bounced of the fresh effort to record a sixth-of-nine finish at Ascot when stepping up to 1800m.
Weeraechoux ran the second-fastest closing splits of that January 11 event and he recorded that same feat third-up when getting home for third vs an on-speed pattern.
His ninth-of-eleven finish last time out was much better than it reads, with the son of Jimmy Choux running the fastest last 200m of that Pinjarra race.
Eagle Farm Roughie Tip
Race 7 No. 6 Connewarre
This Toowoomba-based has previously been competitive in Brisbane and while he was a beaten fav last start, there were excuses in that third-up performance.
With inside rivals shifting out, Connewarre was shuffled back to the rear of the field at a key stage of that February 16 affair and he was never in any rhythm afterwards.
The four-year-old had been ticking well prior to that recent failure, with a solid return outing over six furlongs before relishing the rise in distance second-up.
A senior rider going on Connewarre for this assignment is a plus and he was unlucky via a 1500m Eagle Farm attempt in October, where he was well backed.
Flemington Roughie Tip
Race 6 No. 12 Wonder Boy
A failure to round his spring prep and then a somewhat plain January return had Wonder Boy at the crossroads ahead of a Manfred Stakes attempt at Sandown.
In a tactical affair and with the race shape against him, he produced arguably the best run of that last event and Tropicus franked the form at Group 3 level last week.
While it's a competitive BM84, taking on older rivals as a late season three-year-old is good placement and he's been in stakes company since his debut triumph.
Given the space between runs, Wonder Boy has completed two good jump-outs in February and now tuned up for a rise in trip, there's no excuses here.
Morphettville Roughie Tip
Race 5 No. 4 Rocket Boosters
His debut victory rated quite well for the class via the January 31 program from Werribee and Rocket Boosters landed a big betting move in the process.
He also overcame trouble to salute in that 1000m appearance, with the son of Cable Bay taking a tight gap in the straight and that's never easy for a first starter
Staying at 1000m worked against him when attempting a Moonee Valley BM64 at start two, but he was still strong late (fastest closing sectionals of the race).
Rocket Boosters had also accepted on Friday night at The Valley, but connections are crossing the border and they can be more positive early from a low draw.
Randwick Roughie Tip
Race 3 No. 7 Key Largo
It's a competitive little race, where Spring Lee is suited down in grade from a Group 3 tilt, but the fav is getting costly and a strong 1200m is still a query with her.
Key Largo can sprint well fresh, which was evident last campaign when finishing off well behind Jedibeel and Iowna Merc (both subsequent stakes winners).
He has worked well in two summer heats at Warwick Farm, with a runner-up finish on January 30 and he was then good late when contesting 792m trial on February 11.
In a small field, where Key Largo can camp off the speed but still be within striking range, this might be his set-up, as he can peel off a big finish when conditions suit.
