Cronulla Sharks vs South Sydney Rabbitohs, Round 3 2025 - Expert Prediction

After two tough road trips, Cronulla will make a triumphant return to Sharks Stadium as they hand Wayne Bennett and his Rabbitohs side their first loss of the season.

The Sharks pushed four-time reigning premiers Penrith in Vegas, before surviving the heat and humidity of Townsville last week, crushing the hapless Cowboys 36-12, with their outside backs running riot. Addin Fonua-Blake is already living up to his 'signing of the season' tag, currently sitting in second place for post-contact metres (154), while he's racked up the third-most running metres for a forward in the competition (333).

With Cronulla's explosive back five notching up 886 run metres and 26 tackle breaks last week, the Rabbitohs are going to be in for a tough day at the office. Souths have done a good job to go 2-0 to start the season, but they've had a soft draw and this represents their first true test.

The Sharks to win by a converted try with Under 59.5 total points is the best bet for this clash, while I'm focusing on tryscorers for the remaining wagers.

  • Sharks have won their last three meetings vs Rabbitohs
  • Sharks covered a -5.5 line with Under 59.5 points in all three of those wins
  • Under 59.5 points has landed in 17 of the last 18 meetings between the teams
  • Sharks cruised to a 36-12 win over Cowboys last week
  • Ronaldo Mulitalo has scored 37 tries in 33 games at Sharks Stadium
  • Samuel Stonestreet has scored eight tries in his past five games
  • Kayal Iro has scored a try in his last three games at Sharks Stadium & has three tries from two games in 2025
  • Rabbitohs have conceded a try to their opposing right winger in their last nine games (Stonestreet)

Head To Head

As mentioned, the Sharks have won their last three games against the Rabbitohs, including 34-22 and 20-6 victories in 2024. Cronulla have won five of their last eight home outings with the Bunnies.

The Sharks performed strongly under the bright lights of Allegiant Stadium in a tight 28-22 loss to the Panthers before heading up north to completely dismantle North Queensland 36-12 last week.

Kayal Iro and Sam Stonestreet both crossed for doubles, while prolific winger Ronaldo Mulitalo also scored his first four-pointer of the season. Addin Fonua-Blake is already proving his worth through the middle, while Briton Nikora continues to be a menace on the edges, scoring a try in both games.

Cronulla have strike all over the park, which is allowing Nicho Hynes and Braydon Trindall to work their magic. Great chance for the Sharkies to start building some more momentum for 2025.

Craig Fitzgibbon has stuck with the same 17 that ripped apart North Queensland last week, with hulking prop Tom Hazelton still sidelined with back problems.

It's been a successful return to Redfern for Wayne Bennett, with the master coach guiding his team to a 2-0 start to the season.

Souths were able to edge out a depleted Dolphins outfit 16-14 in their season opener before registering a come-from-behind 25-24 victory over the Dragons last week.

Jye Gray has been on fire to start the season, topping the running metres and post-contact metres charts, while he also opened the try-scoring in the win over the Dragons, which saw halfback Jamie Humphreys play a starring role, slotting the decisive field goal in the 76th minute.

Big in for the Bunnies as Jack Wighton returns from suspension for this clash, pushing Fletcher Myers to the wing and Bayleigh Bentley-Hape back to the reserves.

Lachlan Hubner has been suspended for two games, which means Liam Le Blanc joins the bench and Tallis Duncan starts at lock. New signing Mikaele Ravalawa has been named 18th man.

Verdict

The Sharks are backed to cover a small -5.5 line and win with Under 59.5 total points, with that under landing in 17 of the last 18 meetings between the sides.

Cronulla's lethal backline will again dominate the try-scoring, with Mulitalo, Stonestreet and Iro all crossing.
