Bayer Leverkusen need a minor miracle if they are to progress to a first Champions League quarter-final since 2001/02 when they host German rivals Bayern Munich in the second leg of their R16 tie on Tuesday night.

Leverkusen were blown away 3-0 by Bayern in the first leg and will need to become just the fifth team in history to overturn a 3+ goal deficit in the UEFA Champions League in order to progress. Interestingly, both teams were upset in the Bundesliga this past weekend, so quite clearly they were prioritising this encounter.

However, things didn't go according to plan for Leverkusen, with star player Florian Wirtz forced off injured this past weekend, while Vincent Kompany opted to rest several of his key figures. It's been a tough last week or so for Leverkusen and this will prove too big a mountain to climb. I'm backing Bayern to emerge triumphant again as Leverkusen throw everyone forward in a desperation bid to claw their way back into the tie.

Head To Head

Xabi Alonso was unbeaten in his six previous meetings with Bayern as Leverkusen's manager, but that all changed with last week's 3-0 hammering in the first leg.

Leverkusen went into last week's first leg full of confidence having enjoyed recent success over Bayern, but it was ultimately a horror night for Alonso and his troops at the Allianz Arena.

Nordi Mukiele was given his marching orders and Leverkusen went behind within the opening 10 minutes before conceding two more times.

Things went from bad to worse over the weekend, with Leverkusen losing 2-0 against Werder Bremen as Florian Wirtz went off injured.

Leverkusen are now on the brink of losing three matches in a row for the first time since August 2022.

Bayern also suffered a shock loss in the Bundesliga over the weekend, going down 3-2 at home against relegation-threatened Bochum.

However, Kompany did decide a number of star players for that game, including Harry Kane. Nevertheless, it was a horror show for Bayern, who lost from 2-0 up, missed a penalty and saw Joao Palhinha sent off.

In saying that, with all of their nearest rivals on the table also slipping up, there was lasting damage done for Bayern, who still remain in firm control of the title race.

Bayern are now gunning to reach the Champions League quarter-finals for the 35th time - but they will know they can't afford to be complacent here having struggled on the road in this competition in the league phase.

Bayern dominated Leverkusen in the first leg and it's tough to see the hosts having enough left to muster any sort of comeback here.

Leverkusen will need to go all out early, so they will be vulnerable at the back. I'm jumping on Bayern to win again, with both teams finding the back of the net.
