Bayer Leverkusen will be looking to extend their unbeaten run against Bayern Munich when the two German juggernauts collide in a blockbuster Champions League R16 first leg showdown on Wednesday night.

It promises to be a cracking tie and I'm backing Leverkusen to at the very least avoid defeat in the first leg. Xavi Alonso hasn't lost to Bayern as manager of Leverkusen, going unbeaten in all six previous meetings - including knocking them out of the German Cup earlier this season. In the last encounter - recently on February 16 - Leverkusen restricted Bayern to just two shots for the entire game and zero on target. With this in mind, I'm confident Leverkusen can secure a positive result to bring back home for the second leg.

As mentioned, Leverkusen are unbeaten in their last six meetings with Bayern. The two heavyweight teams met just a few weeks ago in the Bundesliga, with the match ending in a 0-0 stalemate.

It's been a wild ride for Bayern in the Champions League so far - defeats to Aston Villa, Barcelona and a 3-0 thumping at the hands of Feyenoord meant they forced into the R32 instead of automatic progression to this round.

It was thought that Bayern would make light work of Scottish champions Celtic, but it transformed into a huge grind, with the German giants almost dragged into extra-time. Alphonso Davies was the hero, scoring in the 94th minute to hand Bayern a 1-1 draw on the night and 3-2 win on aggregate.

Bayern have performed strongly since that night, crushing Eintracht Frankfurt 4-0 before recovering from a goal down to beat Stuttgart 3-1, meaning they maintain a big eight-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga table.

Leverkusen won five of their eight games to earn an automatic passage through to the Champions League R16, where they now come up against their German rivals in a do-or-die showdown.

It was always going to be tough for Leverkusen to back up their extraordinary season from last term, but they are doing a solid job, remaining alive in all three competitions heading into this encounter - including knocking Bayern out of the German Cup and reaching the semi-finals.

After drawing 0-0 with Bayern in the Bundesliga, Leverkusen have won back-to-back games, defeating Kiel 2-1 before a 4-1 demolition over Frankfurt.

Leverkusen have had Bayern's number under the tutelage of Alonso and there's no reason to believe they can't come away with another positive result here.

Bayern couldn't threaten at all when they played just a few weeks ago and it's becoming a regular theme in meetings between these two German heavyweights. Backing Leverkusen to at the very least earn a draw.
