Uruguay vs Argentina Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

Uruguay will be looking to take another step towards the 2026 World Cup when they play host to leaders Argentina in CONMEBOL qualifying action on Friday night in Montevideo.

Having already conquered the likes of Brazil and Colombia at home in this World Cup qualifying campaign, Uruguay will be confident of defeating an Argentina side who are dealing with various injuries to key players. Uruguay sit just five points behind Argentina in third spot on the ladder and can leapfrog Brazil into second if they can secure all three points here.

I'm backing Marcelo Bielsa's side to emerge triumphant in front of their own fans. Argentina will be without a host of star players, including Lionel Messi and Lautaro Martinez, which leaves their attacking options looking thin. Argentina have also struggled on the road lately, losing two of their last three away World Cup qualifiers. Uruguay beat Argentina earlier in this campaign in Buenos Aires and can double down with a victory at home here.

  • Uruguay beat Argentina 2-0 on the road in the most-recent meeting in 2023
  • Argentina have lost two of their last three away games
  • Argentina have scored in their last nine WCQ away games
  • Uruguay beat Colombia & drew with Brazil in their last qualifying games

Head To Head

As mentioned, Uruguay defeated Argentina 2-0 in the last meeting between the teams in 2023, which was their first victory in this H2H since 2013.

Uruguay Form

Uruguay come into this fixture unbeaten in six of their last seven games in all competitions and would have been pleased with their efforts from the last qualifying window.

Indeed, Uruguay came away with a thrilling 3-2 win at home over Colombia before a 1-1 share of the spoils away to Brazil.

Currently seven points clear of seventh-placed Bolivia with this game in hand, Uruguay are strongly positioned to secure an automatic spot to this upcoming expanded edition of the World Cup.

Uruguay Team News

Bielsa has named a huge 38-man squad for these two upcoming fixtures, meaning a whole host of players are likely to miss out.

Man United midfielder Manuel Ugarte has been selected, but he will miss this encounter due to suspension.

Despite some poor form at club level, Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez is likely to start at striker for the hosts.

Argentina Form

Reigning World Cup champions Argentina raced out of the blocks this qualifying campaign and remain four points clear at the top of the table - despite winning just three of their last six qualifying games.

Perhaps guilty of taking their foot off the gas with qualification all but assured, Argentina suffered defeats against Paraguay and Colombia late last year, while they also had to settle with a draw against Venezuela.

Lionel Scaloni's side got back on track with a narrow 1-0 dispatch of Peru in their most-recent outing, which was their third straight home win to nil.

Argentina Team News

Big blow for Argentina with superstar Lionel Messi sidelined through injury.

Lautaro Martinez is also out, along with Gonzalo Montiel, Giovani Lo Celso and Paulo Dybala.

Atletico Madrid striker Julien Alvaraz is set to lead the line, while Angel Correa will likely fill the void left by Messi.

Verdict

Good opportunity for Uruguay to take advantage of a depleted Argentina side at home.

Argentina have lost two of their last three away games and this will prove another tough assignment - but they can get on the scoresheet in defeat.
