Kyrgios registered his first tour-level victory in two-and-a-half years in his Miami opener, but this is an extremely tough assignment for the Aussie. Khachanov may not be in the best form to start the season, but the Russian is always a difficult opponent - and these two have had some epic battles in the past, with their last two meetings going five sets at the slams.

For me, there's still lots of uncertainty surrounding Kyrgios - he played well in his win over Mackenzie McDonald, but how the wrist pulls up remains to be seen. Khachanov is a big step up in class and he will be motivated for this one. Kyrgios will need to have another excellent serving day to keep this match competitive, but I'm leaning with Khachanov in straights.

Head To Head

Khachanov was one of the last opponents Kyrgios played before his career was hijacked with injuries, with the Russian winning their US Open quarter-final in 2022 in five sets.

Kyrgios had earlier prevailed 7-6 in the fifth in their 2020 third round Australian Open clash, while Khachanov won in three in their first contest back in 2019 at Cincinnati.

Again, really not much form to go on here.

Kyrgios was 0-3 for 2025 entering Miami, but the Aussie played a very solid match and showcased great competitive spirit to come from behind to beat Mackenzie McDonald in three sets.

After dropping the opening set, Kyrgios steadied the ship and helped by a brilliant 77 per cent first serve, he was able to dig out a 3-6 6-3 6-4 victory for his first win since October 2022.

Earlier this season, Kyrgios was knocked out of Brisbane in the first round by Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, while an abdominal issue contributed to a first round exit at the Australian Open against Jacob Fearnley.

Kyrgios was in tears as he was forced to retire due to his surgically repaired wrist in the first round of Indian Wells against Botic Van De Zandschulp, but he seemed unbothered throughout his win over McDonald - but it remains to be seen how the two-time Miami semi-finalist pulls up after 48 hours rest.

Karen Khachanov Form

Khachanov has been one of the best players in the world for a long time now, holding a consistent ranking around the top 10, winning a Masters 1000 title and making the semis of Grand Slams.

However, Khachanov has really struggled to launch the 2025 season, coming into this tournament with a disappointing 4-6 record.

The Russian was knocked out in the third round of the Australian Open by Alex Michelsen in straight sets and has only won two matches since.

One of those victories was a solid three-set triumph over Jakub Mensik in Indian Wells last week, but his run was ended in the following round by Ben Shelton.

Khachanov has played well in Miami in recent years, winning six of his last eight matches at the tournament, including making the 2023 semi-finals.

Verdict

Nick Kyrgios v Karen Khachanov

Kyrgios played well to beat McDonald, but I'm going to need to see how his wrist holds up before backing him any further.

Khachanov isn't in great form, but this is the kind of match that will motivate him - can't see the Russian losing this one and he'll likely win in straights.
