De Minaur has a notoriously horrendous record against Sinner, losing all nine previous meetings and the last 17 consecutive sets. It's obviously a nightmare matchup for the Aussie. However, if there's any time for de Minaur to snap that sequence, it's now. Sinner has appeared vulnerable and less than 100 per cent fit at stages throughout this tournament, dropping sets to Tristan Schoolkate and Holger Rune, looking physically ill and shaking in the latter. In fact, there's unconfirmed reports circling that Sinner is dealing with a bout of pneumonia.
De Minaur has dropped just one set for the tournament and has taken his game to another level over the last 12 months, establishing himself as a genuine top 10 player and reaching the quarter-finals of four consecutive Grand Slam tournaments. I'm backing Demon to push this Over 34.5 total games and at the very least win a set - and there's definitely value on the Aussie digging out a first-ever win over Sinner in a marathon encounter.
Head To Head
As mentioned, Sinner leads 9-0, winning the last 17 straight sets - including three meetings in 2024 in Rotterdam, the ATP Finals and Davis Cup.
Jannik Sinner Form
Of course, Sinner put together an extraordinary 2024 season, winning his first two Grand Slams at the Australian Open and US Open, along with taking out the year-end ATP Finals and securing Masters 1000 crowns in Miami, Cincinnati and Shanghai, compiling an incredible 73-6 record and finishing the year as World No. 1.
Now comes the hard part for Sinner - and that's backing everything up, while he also has to deal with the ongoing threat of a suspension due to his failed doping tests from last year.
The 23-year-old certainly isn't in ideal condition right now at the Australian Open. Sinner was fortunate not to drop a set in two tiebreaks in his opening round against Nicolas Jarry, while he did lose one set each against Aussie wildcard Tristan Schoolkate and Holger Rune in the fourth round.
Sinner was shaking and was visibly under the weather in that four-set victory over Rune and it remains to be seen how he has recovered for this encounter.
Alex de Minaur Form
It's been an excellent last 12 months for de Minaur, with the Aussie taking his game to the next level and cementing himself as a top 10 player, hitting a career-high of No. 6 in the world after making the quarter-finals of Roland Garros, Wimbledon and the US Open last year.
Not even a serious hip injury could put a dampener on de Minaur's 2024 campaign, with the 25-year-old qualifying for the season-ending ATP Finals for the first time.
Declaring his 'legs are back', de Minaur is now targeting his deepest run at a slam yet after making his maiden Australian Open quarter-final.
De Minaur has dropped just one set in victories over Botic Van De Zandschulp, Tristan Boyer, Francisco Cerundolo and Alex Michelsen, with his R16 win over the rising American in straight sets an extremely impressive performance.
